Blond Soprano Star celebrates International Women’s Day

Celebrating International Women’s Day Viva Live Music are featuring some of our amazing talented female artistes. Today it is the turn of the wonderful Marika, whom many of our clients know as she is a great favourite! Not only does she appear as a Cabaret Singer┬ábut she also leads some of the Christmas singing.

What made you pursue a musical career?

This is a hard question. I didn’t. It found me. I was brought up in a musical environment; as an Austrian it was ingrained into me. I wasn’t encouraged at school to pursue a music career and there isn’t necessarily a clear musical career path. In fact I went in blindly and if I knew now then what I know now, I would never have done it! The sacrifices and compromises you have to make, balance with the passion and love of performing. It is a choice I am delighted to have made and is a privilege to be involved in.

How long have you been in the business? I started as a full time freelancer 7 years ago. Before that I was working in HR whilst doing singing on the side.

What sort of music and performances are you involved in? A real mixed bag. I am an opera crossover singer. I am classically trained but do jazz, cabaret, music theatre. But I still do staged opera, recitals and concerts. I design packages for weddings, corporate entertainment, celebrations and cabaret shows.

Where do you perform? Anywhere! The world is my stage. The Royal Opera House, street performances, churches, living rooms, private members clubs, stadiums. I am also a session singer, so perform in studios.

Plans for the next five years?

I am working to do a headline act onto luxury cruise ships with a band. I have had offers to do work in Malaysia. You take opportunities as they come in and I really want to travel round the world. I am still loving performing!
